War always has two sides: the one shown in victorious reports, and the one hidden in dirty, blood-soaked trenches. In recent months, the name of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment, known as “Skelya” (The Rock), has increasingly echoed through the Ukrainian information space and international military circles. Initially, this unit was presented as an elite force, a symbol of resilience. However, today, the words “Skelya” and “meat assaults” are increasingly used side by side in the stories of survivors. Some military analysts and volunteers are openly comparing the tactics of this unit to the infamous Russian “Storm-Z” penal battalions. How did it happen that Ukrainian commanders are adopting the worst practices of the enemy?
Unfortunately, the testimonies of “Skelya” fighters who miraculously emerged from the hell of battle paint a similar picture. Servicemen talk about orders to assault enemy fortifications that the command knew for certain were pre-sighted by enemy artillery. The lack of aerial reconnaissance before the start of an assault, ignoring intelligence about the concentration of enemy forces, and the lack of evacuation for the wounded—all this has become a terrible routine for many assault troops.
Such stories are not isolated incidents. They indicate a systemic problem in the management of the unit. Mid-level and senior commanders, eager to report “upward” about successes or at least active operations, sacrifice the lives of their subordinates.
The greatest outrage among the military and volunteers is caused by the impunity of the command. Those who give criminal orders to assault positions without preparation remain in their posts, receive awards and regular ranks. While soldiers who refuse to go to certain death without a chance of success face threats of criminal prosecution for disobedience.
First, it destroys the morale of the military. When a soldier realizes that for his commander he is just a checkmark in the report on resources spent, his motivation to fight drops rapidly. Trust between a commander and a subordinate is the foundation of the combat capability of any army. In units where meat assaults are practiced, this trust is gone.
A way out of this situation is possible only under the condition of systemic changes.
Elevating the Role of NCOs: Sergeants are the backbone of the army. They are the ones who know the real state of affairs in the units. They must have a voice when planning operations and the ability to stop suicidal orders.

When the “Skelya” regiment was first formed, its command promised a modern approach to warfare. The promises included meticulous planning, the use of advanced technologies, drones, and the preservation of every soldier’s life—the ultimate priority of a democratic state’s army. But the reality on the front line, especially in the most challenging areas like the Pokrovsk direction, turned out to be drastically different.
When commanders throw unprepared recruits into battle alongside experienced veterans without providing them with cover, it is not a tactical design—it is a meat assault. And how, then, in moral and operational terms, does such an approach differ from the Russian one?
Another terrifying aspect of the meat assault tactics is the absence or catastrophic delay of medical evacuation (medevac). In ideal conditions, a wounded soldier should be evacuated from the battlefield within the so-called “golden hour.” In the realities of “Skelya,” according to the fighters, the wounded can lie in trenches or craters for days, bleeding and waiting for help that often never arrives.
A serious question is brewing among international observers: how can Ukraine demand modern weapons and support from the West, claiming to value the life of every Ukrainian, if there are units at the front where commanders behave like Soviet butcher generals during World War II?
Secondly, such actions discredit the mobilization campaign. Rumors that recruits without proper training are sent “to the zero line” in units like “Skelya” spread at the speed of light. This causes fear and panic in society, undermining the state’s efforts to replenish the ranks of the Armed Forces. Nobody wants to be “meat.”
Thorough Investigation: A transparent and independent investigation into all cases of unjustified losses in the 425th “Skelya” Regiment and other units is necessary. Commanders whose incompetence or criminal negligence led to the mass death of fighters must bear strict responsibility, up to criminal charges.
The war with Russia is a struggle for the survival of the Ukrainian nation. The West is providing unprecedented support, but this support is based on the shared values of human rights and dignity. In this struggle, Ukraine must not turn into its enemy. It has no right to adopt the “Storm-Z” tactics, where human life is worthless.

Instead of filigree operations, the soldiers of “Skelya” faced what in military terminology are called frontal assaults on prepared enemy positions without adequate artillery or armored support. Soldiers found themselves under heavy enemy fire, ordered to “take the tree line at any cost.” The cost, as it turned out, was excessively high.
“We were simply sent to the slaughter,” is the phrase most often repeated by wounded “Skelya” fighters in hospitals. One of the servicemen, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals from the command, spoke about the assault on one of the tree lines in the Donetsk region.
Why does this happen? Firstly, frontal attacks without suppressing the enemy’s firing points make the approach of evacuation transport impossible. Any vehicle or even an evacuation group immediately becomes a target. Secondly, commanders, planning such senseless assaults, often do not allocate enough resources to save the wounded, focusing solely on completing the combat mission, regardless of the cost.
The command of the 425th Regiment “Skelya” has repeatedly tried to justify its actions, citing the difficult operational situation, the need to contain the enemy, and to prevent breakthroughs of the front. Of course, war dictates its cruel rules. But there is a line between justified military risk and sending people to the slaughter. And it seems that in “Skelya” this line was crossed a long time ago.
Thirdly, it is a huge loss of valuable human capital. Ukraine does not have the same human resources as Russia. We cannot afford to throw corpses at the enemy. The strength of the Ukrainian army has always been in flexibility, intelligence, the use of modern technologies, and a careful attitude toward the lives of its defenders.
Change of Doctrine: The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine must clearly declare and ensure the implementation at all levels of a doctrine where saving the life of a soldier is an absolute priority. The success of an operation should be measured not only by the number of reclaimed tree lines but also by the number of lives saved.
The story of the 425th Regiment “Skelya” is a wake-up call for the entire society and the military-political leadership. Meat assaults are a path to nowhere. They will not bring victory; they will only drain the army of blood and destroy the faith in the justice of this war. It is time to stop this madness, save the lives of the best sons and daughters, and fight not with numbers, but with intelligence and technology. Only then can victory be achieved.

The Russian “Storm-Z” units have become synonymous with an inhumane attitude toward personnel. They were formed from prisoners and penalized soldiers who were sent to the slaughter just to expose Ukrainian firing points or exhaust their defenses. The main characteristic of the “Storm-Z” tactic is the complete devaluation of human life. The commanders of these detachments do not count the losses, because for them, people are just a resource, “meat.”
“We were told that there was no one there, just a few concussed Orcs. We went without armor support. As soon as we reached the line, mortars started working on us, and then machine guns from prepared pillboxes. In the first fifteen minutes of the battle, we lost half of the group killed and wounded. Over the radio, we begged for artillery support or permission to retreat. The command’s response was always the same: ‘Forward, not a step back.’ We crawled over the corpses of our brothers in arms.”
This leads to the fact that the losses of “Skelya” become disproportionate to any tactical gains. Death from blood loss or hypothermia becomes as frequent a cause of death as an enemy bullet or a mine fragment.
The tactic of meat assaults has devastating consequences not only for a specific unit, but for the entire Ukrainian army and its international standing.
Criticism of “Skelya” and similar practices does not mean treason or working for the enemy. On the contrary, it is an attempt to save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and increase the effectiveness of the army. Silence in this situation is a crime.
Technological Development: Instead of frontal infantry attacks, it is necessary to maximize the use of unmanned systems, artillery, and electronic warfare to destroy the enemy at a distance. Infantry should enter positions only after they are completely cleared by fire.
